Wellington (New Zealand), 8 Nov. (LaPresse) – New Zealanders will have to wait weeks to find out who will lead the country, after Saturday’s election failed to produce a decisive victory for either the right or the left, leaving difficult negotiations for a narrow governing majority as the only possible way forward. The most uncertain election result in recent years has been a bitter defeat for the main parties that have long dominated New Zealand politics – Christopher Luxon’s centre-right National Party and the centre-left Labour Party led by Chris Hipkins – as voters gave greater support to smaller parties, and more than ever to those at the extremes of the ideological spectrum. With these results, the smaller parties would enter negotiations for a government agreement with greater bargaining power to secure more substantial political concessions from a weakened National or Labour Party.
