Frankfurt (Germany), 3 Nov. (LaPresse) – A cyberattack has hit the refrigeration systems at an Edeka supermarket in Reisbach, Lower Bavaria, causing temperatures to rise to 50 degrees Celsius and forcing the store to throw away huge quantities of food. As reported by the Bavarian broadcaster BR and by Welt, the store manager revealed this in a post on Facebook. “The sad consequence: huge quantities of food had to be thrown away,” he wrote, explaining that the organisation Foodsharing stepped in to salvage whatever could still be saved. However, most of the chilled products were disposed of. The shelves are expected to be restocked with fresh produce on Tuesday. The incident is part of a series of cyberattacks that have affected supermarkets in several European countries. Following incidents in France, Sweden, Belgium, Estonia, Finland and Luxembourg, cases were also reported on Monday in Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and Portugal. The hackers manipulated the refrigeration systems, either switching off the cooling or setting high temperatures, resulting in significant food wastage. At present, those responsible have not been identified, nor have the motives behind the attacks been clarified.
