Rome, 26 Oct. (LaPresse/AP) – Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has denied reports that there was an altercation between the Prime Minister and the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, triggered by an order to carry out an ‘operation’ which, according to the army, could have reignited the conflict with Iran. The report, first published by Channel 12, was described by Netanyahu’s office as “fake news”. Defence Minister Israel Katz had also promptly denied the report. Opposition candidates have accused Netanyahu of jeopardising regional stability for the sake of his own political survival. Gadi Eisenkot warned his rival not to “dare to put his own political interests before the security of the state”. “ ‘Netanyahu, I’m keeping an eye on you,’ he wrote on X. Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beytenu party, sent a letter to the Israeli Attorney General calling for a criminal investigation into possible treason by Netanyahu, whom he accused of ‘attempts to drag Israel into war on the eve of the elections, including a willingness to sacrifice (Israeli) soldiers for fear of losing the elections’.”
