Turin, 23 Oct. (LaPresse) – US First Lady Melania Trump has succeeded in securing a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, limited to the town of Oleshky. This was reported by the White House in a statement, which explains that “both countries have agreed to temporarily suspend all military action in Oleshky, to allow humanitarian aid to enter and to facilitate the evacuation of civilians via a specially designated safety corridor. The local ceasefire will come into effect on 29 October 2026”. “The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a frontline town in the conflict, on the brink of catastrophe. The population remaining in the town consists mainly of elderly people who urgently need medical care, medicines, food and drinking water,” said Melania Trump. “The residents of Oleshky have limited access to electricity, live amidst mined roads and are regularly subjected to military attacks. It was abundantly clear that, without my intervention, it would have been impossible to get humanitarian aid into the town and evacuate the elderly.” The First Lady and her representative, the report states, “worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to define the terms of the local ceasefire.” The First Lady initiated talks with both nations and secured an agreement between the parties on the objectives of the agreement, technical procedures, timelines, operational arrangements and terms, in her official capacity as the sole mediator.” “Non-military civilian representatives from both countries will work together to visit the residents of Oleshky in their homes and assess the level of assistance they require. Residents wishing to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transport to their preferred destination. I anticipate that some will wish to go to Russia and others to Ukraine,” said Melania Trump. “I have also secured,” she added, “the willingness of an impartial American media organisation to accompany and document the Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground throughout the entire process. This will play a significant role in ensuring that the wishes of each family are faithfully respected.” The First Lady, the statement notes, became aware of the emergency situation in Oleshky during a private meeting held in New York, on the occasion of her ‘Fostering the Future Together’ event, organised during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. “My representative and I immediately utilised the communication channel we had established with Russia and Ukraine through the six previous reunifications of 34 children. Both countries promptly appointed teams to coordinate the complex operations required, including mine clearance. Since then, all parties have been working tirelessly,” explained Melania Trump.
