Udin Dhunga (Nepal), 26 Aug. (LaPresse/AP) – Hundreds of people are missing after an avalanche of ice and rocks triggered massive flash floods that swept through parts of Nepal, killing at least eight people and causing extensive damage to villages and infrastructure. Authorities report that 384 tourists, including 291 from countries including India, the United Kingdom, the United States and Malaysia, are missing. The Bhotekoshi River flooded around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, destroying several villages, roads and hydroelectric plants, authorities said. Warnings have been issued to residents of several districts in Nepal, urging them to stay away from the banks of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers. Nepal has requested relief assistance from India and China. “We have asked both India and China to help us in the relief operations,” said Sasmit Pokharel, a spokesman for the Nepalese government.
