(LaPresse) – “I do not see a clash between Italy and Germany.” This was stated by German government spokesperson Stephan Kornelius, responding at a press conference to questions regarding the disagreement between Rome and Berlin over the implementation of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and, in particular, the transfers of so-called ‘Dublin cases’. “The further development of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum is a very significant success, which has made it possible to curb irregular migration and which will also be key to better management and organisation, based on humanitarian standards for refugees,” said Kornelius. “Irregular migration into the EU has fallen by 55 per cent over the last two years,” he added, citing a figure from European Commissioner Magnus Brunner. “The GEAS forms the basis of this European cooperation. The GEAS creates order, the GEAS creates security, and the GEAS also creates legal certainty,” the spokesperson emphasised. “It is therefore a good balance between responsibility and solidarity if the EU adheres to uniform standards and procedures at European level.” “The Federal Government therefore supports the implementation of the right to asylum, which it has also played a key role in promoting,” he added, emphasising that Berlin considers it important that “the common asylum system, which is effective and fair, be supported and implemented equally by all”. As for relations with Rome, a spokeswoman for the German Interior Ministry reiterated that “Germany and Italy are working closely together, in a spirit of trust, on issues relating to the implementation of migration policy”. She added: “In particular, with regard to coordination on the implementation of the CEAS, we are engaged in close, trusting and collaborative dialogue with Italy”.
