This is according to a source familiar with the case quoted by the Associated Press, who added that Mangione could still change his mind. Previous negotiations for a plea deal had broken down in June. Neither Mangione’s lawyers nor the Department of Justice have commented on the hearing, which was requested at short notice by the parties. Mangione, 28, faces federal and state charges of stalking Thompson and killing him on 4 December 2024 outside a New York hotel, whilst the executive was on his way to UnitedHealth Group’s annual investors’ conference. The trial on the state murder charges is due to begin next month. It is unclear whether it will go ahead if Mangione pleads guilty in the federal proceedings.
