Seoul (South Korea), 14 Aug. (LaPresse/AP) – North Korea is threatening a harsh response to the United States and South Korea on the eve of the joint Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises, which Pyongyang describes as a ‘dress rehearsal for war’ and considers more provocative and dangerous than last year’s exercises. In a statement released today by state media, the North Korean Foreign Ministry said that the manoeuvres, which begin on Monday and will last for 11 days, are taking instability in the region to “a new level”. “It is our consistent security principle to respond to a new level of threat with a new level of deterrence,” Pyongyang declared, adding that North Korea will make its position towards its enemies “clearer” through a “responsible and resolute” exercise of its right to self-defence. According to Kim Jong Un’s regime, the exercises will involve all the military assets and combat capabilities of the United States and South Korea and will be “more seriously provocative and dangerous” in nature than those in 2025.
