This was stated by US Vice-President JD Vance in an interview with Fox News, citing the prevention of Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons as the second objective. Vance also appeared to temper expectations regarding a return to the pre-war situation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Vice-President, the conflict will end with the United States in a stronger position, with Iran without a nuclear weapon, and with the Strait “restored to a state where oil and gas prices are stable for Americans”. Unlike in previous statements, Vance made no reference to the full reopening of the Strait or to the free and unimpeded passage of ships. “This is the number one objective: to keep oil and gas affordable for Americans across the country,” the Vice-President emphasised. The second objective, he added, is to ensure that “Iran can never acquire a nuclear weapon”.
