Rome, 13 Aug. (LaPresse) – Japan has lodged a protest with Russia over Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Kuril Islands. TASS reports this, citing the Japanese Foreign Ministry, which states that all the “Northern Territories” are “ancestral Japanese territory from both a historical and legal perspective”. Since the mid-20th century, Russia and Japan have been negotiating a post-war peace treaty following the Second World War, when all the Kuril Islands were incorporated into the Soviet Union. In 1956, the Soviet Union and Japan signed a joint declaration on the cessation of the state of war. The two countries resumed diplomatic and trade relations but have not yet signed a peace treaty.
