(LaPresse) – Ukraine has suspended an intensive campaign of drone attacks on oil tankers in the Black Sea, following a request made at the end of last month by US Vice-President JD Vance. This is according to official Ukrainian sources speaking to the Financial Times, which reported that Vance made the request on 31 July during a telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Washington was alarmed that Ukraine was further destabilising oil markets and harming US companies by targeting oil tankers carrying crude oil from Kazakhstan to a Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal in the Russian port of Novorossiysk. Since then, Ukraine has not struck any oil tankers near the CPC terminal. “We are listening very carefully to our American partners,” said a senior Ukrainian official, adding that Kyiv had put in place specific “mechanisms” in response to the US request. The CPC had been “a recurring theme in discussions with the US and Kazakh governments”, the source added.
