Madrid (Spain), 4 Aug. (LaPresse) – At least 17 migrants have died whilst attempting to reach the Balearic Islands by boat, after 15 days adrift. This is according to two survivors of North African origin who were rescued south of Mallorca and who had been on board the shipwrecked vessel. Both survivors, who showed signs of malnutrition and dehydration, were taken to Son Espases University Hospital in Palma, according to local media reports. The central government’s delegation in the Balearic Islands reported that the rescue took place at around 3.00 am. The Maritime Rescue Service located a boat 12.68 miles south-west of Mallorca with only two people still alive. The survivors explained that the boat had set sail with 19 people on board and had been adrift for 15 days, and that 17 people had died before help arrived.
