Guatemala City (Guatemala), 4 Aug. (LaPresse/AP) – “The eruption is becoming increasingly explosive. A lava fountain between 200 and 300 metres high has formed above the crater.” This is according to a report by the Guatemalan Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Water Resources, providing updates on the ongoing eruption of the Fuego volcano in Guatemala. CONRED stated in a press release that the authorities are evacuating El Porvenir and the hamlet of Las Lajitas as a precautionary measure. This involves around 50 families, or 250 people. One of the main motorways passing near the volcano, National Road 14, has been closed. The Ministry of Education has suspended lessons in nearby towns and villages.
