Milan, 29 July (LaPresse) – Two firefighters were found dead in their vehicle whilst working to extinguish a fire that broke out in Nea Krya Vrisi (Rethymno), on the island of Crete, Greece. The two were a seasonal firefighter and a veteran with five years’ service with the Agia Fotini fire brigade. They were trapped in the vehicle by the flames, according to the broadcaster ERT. The fire broke out at midday today and spread rapidly due to strong winds. The settlements of Krya Vrysi, Saktouria and Melampes were evacuated. Local media reported that, according to initial information, the two firefighters were trapped in their vehicle after becoming disoriented by the smoke. “They died heroically in the line of duty, protecting the lives and property of citizens and the natural environment,” the fire service said in a statement.
