Guwahati (India), 24 July (LaPresse/AP) – At least 50 people have died and 700,000 have been displaced in India following floods in the north-eastern state of Assam, caused by days of heavy monsoon rains which caused the Brahmaputra River to burst its banks. This is according to local authorities. The river, one of the largest in Asia, which rises in the Tibetan region of China and flows for around 900 kilometres through the state of Assam, has flooded villages, swept away homes and forced nearly 300,000 people to seek refuge in government-run relief camps, the authorities said. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, reported that food and essential supplies have been provided to flood victims, including via airdrops from helicopters. Nearly 900 villages have been submerged and over 7,000 homes are without electricity, he added.
