Manila (Philippines), 22 July (LaPresse) – “If we set a precedent in the Middle East whereby a nation state can decide to control an international waterway, impose a toll and, if it is not paid, blow up ships, we will have set a very dangerous precedent that will be repeated in other parts of the world, including this region.” This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, referring to Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio spoke at the start of an annual meeting in the Philippine capital, Manila, with his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). “We are 100 per cent on ASEAN’s side,” added the US Secretary of State, who also met with other ministers from the Quad partnership – comprising four nations (the United States, Australia, India and Japan) – with whom he discussed shared priorities regarding technology, humanitarian aid, emergency response, as well as maritime and transnational security. Rubio added in a post on social media platform X that “the Quad remains a priority and we will meet again later this year”.
