Evian (France), 14 June (LaPresse) – “France is chairing the G7 this year with a clear objective: to tackle major global imbalances.” This is what French President Emmanuel Macron writes in the message accompanying the launch of the G7 summit, which begins tomorrow in Evian-les-Bains, in Haute-Savoie. “These imbalances,” the French President emphasises, “are primarily economic: when some continents produce too much, some invest too little and others take on significant debt, macroeconomic imbalances are created which fuel geopolitical and trade tensions and ultimately threaten financial stability. We must change our working methods, our objectives and our tools to move beyond confrontational approaches and foster greater international coordination, stabilise our economies, enable balanced and shared growth, and review our system of development and international partnerships.” Still on the subject of imbalances, Macron then focuses on ‘geostrategic’ ones, explaining that, ‘if we aim to restore balance in international relations, we must prevent excessive dependencies, learn lessons from recent crises, including the pandemic, and review the resilience of value chains, particularly those for critical minerals’. “Imbalances,” the French President continued, “are social: protecting our children online, looking after their development whilst also avoiding excessive screen time, and ensuring that new technologies are always a source of progress will also be key objectives on our agenda. Among our priorities will also be to equip ourselves with better means to tackle health challenges, notably through greater cooperation in research. We will also discuss how to protect our democracies and our economies from the rise in drug trafficking and organised crime in our countries.”
