Washington (USA), June 9 (LaPresse) – The Trump administration fears that international travel, coinciding with the FIFA World Cup in the United States, could accelerate the spread of Ebola in the country. For this reason, the US is pressuring Europe to radically change its disease prevention strategy. This is according to sources cited by Axios, which report that President Trump’s top advisers are frustrated by Europe’s limited travel restrictions and would like it to abandon the World Health Organization’s Ebola protocol in favour of the stricter rules imposed by Washington. In this regard, last week the State Department sent an extraordinary request to European countries, urging the adoption of travel restrictions from Central Africa, the region where the outbreak originated. According to Axios, the implicit message behind the US stance is that a possible Ebola outbreak in the United States would be Europe’s fault. According to State Department estimates, the World Cup will bring between 5 and 7 million international visitors to the United States, including players, staff and fans from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak. The African national team has been allowed entry into the United States, but only after spending 21 days under mandatory isolation in Belgium, imposed by the US. The Congolese delegation is scheduled to arrive in Houston on June 11, ahead of the team’s first World Cup participation in over half a century.
