Madrid (Spain), 7 June (LaPresse) – Thousands of worshippers in Plaza Cibeles in Madrid are waiting for Pope Leo XIV, who will celebrate the Corpus Christi Mass. Groups of pilgrims have gathered around the giant screens set up for the occasion along the Paseo del Prado, equipped with chairs, hats and umbrellas to withstand the heat. There are many young people; some say they slept for only a few hours last night and arrived in the square as early as 5 am after taking part in last night’s prayer vigil with the Pontiff. The streets of Madrid have been bustling since the early hours of the morning with pilgrims making their way to Mass, creating an atmosphere quite different from the usual quiet that characterises the city on a Sunday morning.
