Tivat (Montenegro), 5 June (LaPresse) – “We have always supported direct negotiations between Ukraine and the Kremlin. I will be very frank: I believe that Ukraine and Russia are the only ones capable of establishing both a ceasefire and a peace plan. Europeans can make their contribution, given that we are by far the largest funders of Ukraine’s war effort. And Europeans must, at some point, sit down at the negotiating table to discuss a peace plan, because this is a matter of peace and security architecture for Europe, given the geography. So, I think it is a good initiative and it is positive that discussions can resume.” This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron upon arriving at the EU-Balkans summit in Tivat, Montenegro. “We are very keen,” he added, “to structure discussions, an exchange with Russia on matters concerning our common interests, namely our security policy, neighbourhood policy and, of course, defence.”
