Rome, 18 May (LaPresse) – The Nigerian army has announced that it killed 20 Islamic State militants on Sunday in the north-eastern state of Borno during a new joint operation with US forces. The operation, which took place in Metele, followed the killing over the weekend of Abu Bakr al-Mainuki, deputy leader of the local ISIS ‘province’ in West Africa. This marks the first success achieved by Nigerian security forces in eliminating a key Islamist leader, following more than a decade of insurgency by armed groups, including Boko Haram. The US military stated that no American or Nigerian personnel were injured in the operation.
