Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 31 March (LaPresse/AP) – Activists close to the imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi say she may have suffered a heart attack. Mohammadi’s legal team, accompanied by a family member, visited her in Zanjan prison on 29 March, according to a statement released today by the Free Narges Coalition campaign. “Her general health was extremely poor; she appeared pale and weak and had lost a significant amount of weight,” reads the statement, which quotes her cellmates, who say she was found unconscious in her bed on 24 March with her eyes rolled back. “Despite this medical emergency and the obvious signs of a heart attack, the authorities refused to transfer Mohammadi to hospital or allow her to see a specialist,” the statement continues. Mohammadi suffers from heart problems and has had several heart attacks whilst in detention prior to undergoing emergency surgery in 2022.
