Rome, 27 March (LaPresse/AP) – Associated Press journalists near the coastal town of Tyre in Lebanon have spotted plumes of smoke resembling those caused by white phosphorus, the use of which in civilian areas is prohibited under international law. “This image clearly shows the use of white phosphorus dispersed by artillery over a wide area,” said Rich Weir, senior analyst in the Crisis, Conflict and Arms Division at Human Rights Watch. “Although it is difficult to ascertain the legality of its use in this case without further information, its incendiary effects can cause devastating injuries.” Weir said the human rights group had documented Israel’s “repeated and unlawful” use of the substance in populated areas of Lebanon in other instances. Israel has maintained that its use of the substance was in accordance with international law, employing it as a smoke screen or to illuminate areas.
