Denmark: Polls open for general election, Frederiksen seeks third term

Milan, 24 March (LaPresse) – Polls have opened in Denmark for the general election, with Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen seeking a third consecutive term. Over 4.3 million people are called upon to cast their votes for the new Parliament. Frederiksen called the election in February, several months ahead of schedule, in the hope that her resolute stance on the Greenland issue – long a target of US President Donald Trump – might win her favour with voters. During her second term, her support has waned due to the rising cost of living, an issue which, alongside pensions and a possible wealth tax, has been central to the election campaign. Two centre-right challengers hope to oust Frederiksen from the post of prime minister. One comes from the current government, Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen of the liberal Venstre party. The other is Alex Vanopslagh, of the opposition Liberal Alliance.
