Frankfurt (Germany), 6 March (LaPresse) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz defended his attitude during his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. ‘When the cameras are rolling, I don’t start arguing with the US president,’ he said. Some had accused him of being too conciliatory, but Merz explained that he wanted to continue to focus on the shared values in relations between Germany and the United States. ‘In defending the European continent, we are and will remain temporarily dependent on the Americans,’ he added. During the visit, Trump harshly criticised the Spanish government, accusing it of not allowing the United States to use military bases in Spain for a possible conflict with Iran. ‘Spain is behaving terribly and very uncooperatively,’ Trump said, also threatening to terminate ‘all agreements’ with Madrid, without providing further details.
