Ukraine, Association of Ukrainians in Italy: “With Trump the situation has worsened”

Rome, Feb. 22 (LaPresse) – With Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House “the situation has worsened. Putin has been ‘legitimized’ with red carpets and handshakes. Trump is doing nothing but giving Putin the opportunity to continue the war.” Oles Horodetskyy, president of the Association of Ukrainian Christians in Italy, told LaPresse on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion. “In this last year,” he added, “civilian casualties have increased and there is no energy infrastructure in Ukraine that has not been bombed.” According to Horodetskyy, the American president “only wants to make a deal with the stronger party to force the weaker one to surrender. He does not care how the war ends, as long as it ends so he can win the Nobel Prize.” The only move by Trump that he considers appreciable were “the sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil, albeit with many exceptions,” while “Elon Musk did much more by blocking Starlink to Russian soldiers.” A move that, according to Horodetskyy, “triggered chaos” among Moscow’s troops engaged on the front. As for the peace talks, they are “a show for public opinion” and “cannot lead to concrete results while bombs are falling.” “There are attacks every day,” he concluded, “Moscow had promised a week-long truce and it was not respected. The Russians speak of peace in words, but in reality they are continuing the aggression.”
