Brussels, Nov. 26 (LaPresse) – Thirty-nine Italian Members of the European Parliament, belonging to the political groups PD, M5S, AVS and FDI, have signed an appeal for the release of Alberto Trentini, the Italian aid worker detained in Venezuela since November 15, 2024, calling for every available channel to be opened in full respect of human rights, international law and Article 11 of the Italian Constitution. “An act of clemency and openness, at a time marked by regional tensions and threats of military escalation in the areas near the Venezuelan coast, would carry deep meaning. It would be perceived as a sign of willingness to engage in dialogue, a contribution to a more serene and cooperative climate, a step that responds to a call for peace with a concrete gesture of peace,” reads the cross-party text. “As Members of the European Parliament, we also express our appreciation for the attention recently shown by the European institutions regarding the Trentini case. Supporting a positive solution is a shared responsibility between Rome, Brussels and all those who believe in diplomacy as a tool to overcome even the most delicate situations. We therefore call for every available channel to be opened in respect of human rights, international law and Article 11 of the Italian Constitution,” the MEPs write.
