Landover (Maryland, United States), 10 Nov. (LaPresse) – Donald Trump attended the regular season match between the Washington Commanders and the Detroit Lions, becoming the first president to visit a stadium for an NFL match since Jimmy Carter (in 1978). The Washington leader received a lukewarm welcome, with some spectators booing when he appeared on the scoreboard at the end of the first half. Trump was standing in a suite with House Speaker Mike Johnson. ‘We are honoured to welcome President Trump to the sport as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country,’ said Commanders President Mark Clouse. Before Trump (who last February became the first American president to attend a Super Bowl final), Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon (1969) had attended an NFL game. According to an ESPN report, a White House intermediary told the Commanders’ ownership group that Trump would like the club’s new stadium – part of a nearly £3 billion project in the capital – to bear his name.
