Rome, 1 November (LaPresse) – A smoking ban for all children born after 1 January 2007 came into force today in the Maldives. The news was reported by Psm News, the archipelago’s state broadcaster. The Maldives has thus become the first country to introduce a “generational” smoking ban. The measure was promoted by President Mohamed Muizzu. The entry into force of the ban was celebrated with a 24-hour national run in which thousands of people took part. The Minister of Sport and Health, Mohammed Talal, said that efforts to achieve a tobacco-free generation will benefit the entire country. Speaking to Psm News after participating in the 24-hour National Torch Relay, Talal said that the measure will not only benefit young people but will also “encourage their parents to stay away from tobacco”.
