Between August 28 and 29 last year, pilgrims commemorated the anniversary of Imam Hussein’s death in the battle that took place in the city in the year 680. Hussein was the son of Caliph Ali and Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, and is a central figure for Shiites. Worshippers from all parts of the country arrive in the city for the occasion for celebrations.
