Tensions flare up again in the Caucasus between Armenia and Azerbaijan after the ceasefire came to an end in the 2020 conflict. New clashes broke out overnight in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh border region. The sides accuse each other of opening fire. Armenians speak of 49 dead soldiers and there was mortar fire from both sides of the front. Russia and the United States call for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
