McAfee was found dead hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the United States to face tax charges
John McAfee antivirus creator was found dead in a Spanish prison few hours after the court approved his extradition to the United States. The businessman allegedly committed suicide in the prison of Sant Esteve de Sesrovires (Barcelona), according to police sources cited by ‘El Pais’. The Spanish national court had approved the extradition of the businessman to the United States, where he is wanted on fiscal criminal charges involving a prison sentence of up to 30 years. The decision could be appealed and the final extradition will have to be approved by the Spanish government.
Tennessee prosecutors accused the 75-year-old McAfee of tax evasion for failing to report proceeds from promoting cryptocurrencies while consulting, as well as proceeds from language engagements and the sale of his life story rights for a documentary. The charges refer to the three fiscal years from 2016 to 2018. The businessman was arrested last October at Barcelona International Airport. In a videolink hearing earlier this month, McAfee claimed the charges against him were politically motivated and said he would spend the rest of his life in prison if he returned to the United States.
