The Madrid parliament has approved assisted suicide also called euthanasia for people with serious and incurable or debilitating diseases who want to end their life. The law passed with 202 votes in favor and 141 against. Outside the parliament, groups for and against the bill demonstrated during the debate and the vote. Spain is now the fourth country in European Union to take the step. It joins Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. In Colombia the practice is allowed but not regulated, in New Zealand the law will come into force in November. This practice will work with a direct administration of a substance to the patient by the competent health professional.
