Despite the pandemic crisis, the Tanger port had an increase of 23% compared to 2019

The port of Tanger Med has shown sustained growth during the year 2020, allowing the port complex to establish itself as the main container port in the Mediterranean basin. The total volume handled during the past year was 81 million tons, an increase of 23% compared to 2019, the Port Authority of Tanger Med (TMPA) said.

Decline in vehicle sales in Europe and by the slowdown in car production by Renault and PSA in the period (March-May) caused by the health context linked to Covid-19. The pandemic crisis and restrictions also affected passenger traffic, which was down by 75% compared to 2019. As regards maritime traffic, a total of 9,702 ships were berthed in the port of Tangier Med in 2020, down 32% compared to 2019, due to the sharp decline in sea calls by passenger.

Since its inauguration, the scaled port complex has made significant progress. In addition to being the first in the Mediterranean and Africa’s leading container transshipment leader, Tanger Med has managed to connect the North African country to 77 countries and 186 ports, taking the Kingdom to 16th place in international maritime interconnection.
