Wales won 1-0 in a heartbreaking playoff final in Cardiff against Ukraine thanks to an own goal by Ukraine’s Andriy Yarmolenko off a free kick by Wales’ Gareth Bale after 34 minutes. The win qualifies Wales for the World Cup 64 years after their first and only other participation. There was no happy ending for Oleksandr Petrakov’s Ukrainian national team, which hoped to give a morale boost to the embattled nation. The Dragons will be placed in group B with England, the United States and Iran.
