Western Sahara: Italy welcomes Morocco’s serious efforts

Foreign Ministers Bourita and Di Maio: "Excellent state of relations between the two countries"

On the issue of Western Sahara “Italy welcomes the serious and credible efforts made by Morocco in the framework of the United Nations , and invites all parties to renew their commitment in a spirit of realism and compromise,” reads a joint statement between Morocco and Italy following a telephone conversation between Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi Di Maio.

Di Maio referred to Italy’s position on the Western Sahara issue , as expressed in the Declaration on the Multidimensional Strategic Partnership, signed on November 1, 2019 in Rabat, reiterating Italy’s full support for the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations to continue the political process, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, in particular Resolution 2602 of 29/10/2021.

The two ministers also reiterated their great interest in maintaining and strengthening the legal framework that binds Morocco to the European Union, which is essential to guarantee the continuation and stability of their strategic partnership, as explained in the joint press release.

They thus underlined the importance of the EU Council’s initiatives relating to fisheries and agricultural agreements between Morocco and the European Union . The two ministers also had an in-depth exchange on regional and international issues of mutual interest, including the latest developments in Libya .

During the meeting, the two Ministers welcomed the excellent state of relations between Morocco and Italy, agreeing to speed up the implementation of the Multidimensional Strategic Partnership between the two countries .
