Milan, 1 Nov. (LaPresse) – She had won the gold medal in the 1,500 metres at the 2024 European Championships in Rome. One of Europe’s finest middle-distance runners, the Irish athlete Ciara Mageean, has passed away at the age of just 34. “At 6.30 this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer, surrounded by all her loved ones,” read the announcement posted on the athlete’s social media accounts. She had revealed her illness in July 2025 and chronicled her new life in the book ‘My Greatest Race’. At the European Championships in Rome, Mageean achieved the greatest success of her career, completing her collection of continental medals following bronze medals at Amsterdam 2016 and Glasgow 2019, and a silver at Munich in 2022. Deeply moved by the news, FIDAL President Stefano Mei, “speaking on behalf of the Federal Council and the entire Italian athletics community, extends his deepest condolences to the family of Ciara Mageean and to the Irish Athletics Federation”.
