Rome, 28 Oct. (LaPresse) – A successful start in Tokyo for Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, who beat the second seeds, Anna Danilina and Xinyu Jiang, to reach the quarter-finals of the Japanese tournament. The Italian pair won 7-6(7), 6-2 in one hour and 25 minutes, keeping alive their hopes of securing the last available place in the doubles at the WTA Finals. After a difficult start, with Paolini conceding an early break, the Italian pair fought back in the first set, overturning the deficit and winning the tie-break 9-7 after saving a set point. In the second set, Errani and Paolini gradually took control, securing two breaks and closing out the set 6-2. In the quarter-finals, they will face the American Asia Muhammad and the Chinese Zhang Shuai, who defeated Ulrikke Eikeri and Quinn Gleason. This is also a crucial match in terms of qualification: Errani and Paolini currently occupy ninth place in the Race – effectively the last qualifying spot for the Finals – and must defend their position against their rivals. The Italians have won nine titles together in their careers, including Olympic gold at Paris 2024. This season, they have reached the final in Miami and the semi-finals in Doha and Wuhan. In Tokyo, they are now aiming for a result that will bring them closer to the end-of-season event.
