(LaPresse) – Just over 24 hours after mathematically securing the world number one ranking, Elena Rybakina lived up to her words (“Now my goal is to win the tournament”) by reaching her first final at the US Open, the season’s final Grand Slam currently underway on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, New York. In the semi-final, the 27-year-old from Moscow staged a comeback to defeat American Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. On Saturday, Rybakina will contest the title against the player who, after 99 weeks at the top (107 in total during her career), is about to be dethroned: Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. It will be the 18th meeting between the two – the third in a Grand Slam final (Aryna won at the 2023 Australian Open, whilst Elena triumphed this year) – with Sabalenka leading 10–7 following her victories in March in the Indian Wells final and the Miami semi-final.
