Turin, 6 Sept. (LaPresse) – The Italian women’s basketball team came close to pulling off a stunning victory against the United States at the Women’s World Cup. In their second group stage match, the Azzurre lost 55–52 after putting up a strong fight against the world’s top-ranked team. This was the first defeat for Coach Capobianco’s side; however, thanks to China’s victory over the Czech Republic today after overtime (74–70), they have already secured a place among the top three in Group D and will therefore compete in the play-off scheduled for 9 September. Their opponent will be one of Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico or Turkey. Today, the Azzurre’s top scorer was Cecilia Zandalasini with 14 points. “The referees were so good they deserve to officiate the final. I’m proud of these girls!”, commented FIP President Gianni Petrucci with a touch of irony.
