(LaPresse) – Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori defeated Quentin Halys and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, ranked 63rd and 31st in doubles respectively, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the current season on the hard courts of New York. The Italian pair, fourth in the Race to Turin and the tournament’s fourth seeds, will face Belgian Sander Gille and Dutchman Sem Verbeek. Matteo Arnaldi and German Jan-Lannard Struff (No. 279) have also progressed: the pair defeated Monegasque player Romain Arneodo (No. 85) and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (unranked) 6-0, 6-2 in their opening match. Now the challenge intensifies: they will face the top seeds, Finland’s Harri Heliovaara and Britain’s Henry Patten.
