(LaPresse) – A dramatic turn of events at the Vuelta a España: the red jersey wearer, Tadej Pogacar, crashed around 30 km from the finish of the 8th stage – the 171 km Puçol–Xeraco route – and was forced to withdraw due to a serious injury to his left shoulder. The UAE Team Emirates rider, recent winner of the Tour de France and the undisputed leader of this Vuelta, crashed whilst riding in the peloton and slammed his left arm and shoulder violently onto the ground. The television footage was harrowing, showing Pogacar in agony from the pain in his left arm and shoulder, with blood on his face. The reigning world champion tried to get back on his bike, but the attempt was in vain as the pain was too severe. At that point, the Slovenian boarded the ambulance and was taken away for initial medical assessments. Meanwhile, the race continues with the peloton riding as a compact group.
