The American defeated his compatriot Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6 in the final in Montreal, repeating the title he won 12 months ago, when he beat Karen Khachanov in a decisive tie-break. With this victory, Shelton becomes the fourth tennis player of the millennium to win back-to-back titles, following in the footsteps of Murray, Djokovic and Nadal. “Playing the way I have all week and managing to work my way through the draw is a testament to the work I’ve put in,” he emphasised. “All of this also demonstrates my mental strength and my ability to stay focused despite everything that’s going on.”
