Gold went to Hungary’s Hubert Kos in 1’53”08, with silver going to Greece’s Apostolos Siskos in 1’53”81. “I really struggled, especially towards the end. A podium finish was on the cards; I knew it was possible, but third place is absolutely fine,” said Ceccon. Benedetta Pilato also took bronze in the 100m breaststroke, in 1’05”89. Gold went to Britain’s Evans, with silver to Ireland’s Mc Sharry. “This result gives me high hopes for the 50m breaststroke. I deserve it,” commented Pilato. Lisa Angiolini finished eighth. In the 50m freestyle, Silvia Di Pietro came eighth, with gold going to Sweden’s Sjöström. In the 200m freestyle, D’Ambrosio finished seventh in a race won by Romania’s Popovici, the new European record holder.
