Milan, 24 July (LaPresse/AP) – President Donald Trump honoured the Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House, describing the team as “one of the world’s most important brands”. Thursday’s event marked the Dodgers’ second consecutive World Series victory and their second annual visit to the White House, following their narrow victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 last November. Trump said he was delighted to meet Shohei Ohtani and compared him to Babe Ruth. The Dodgers presented Trump with a jersey and a replica of the World Series ring. The President reflected on whether to make the gift public and said that the war in Iran had prevented him from following baseball this season. Trump said that the Dodgers’ victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 last autumn had capped off “a fantastic series”. He admitted he had been surprised that the Dodgers had never won two consecutive titles. “I’m delighted to welcome you back to the White House,” he said. “And perhaps we’ll see each other again next year,” he added. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has in fact stated that the team is aiming for a third consecutive title.
