Milan, 4 June (LaPresse) – ‘I had to make a difficult decision, but it’s the right one for my career.’ Matteo Berrettini commented as such at a press conference on his decision to withdraw from the second all-Italian men’s singles Grand Slam quarter-final against Matteo Arnaldi. “Halfway through the first set I started to feel something when I was serving, but I was still in the match. It was a very tough match and I didn’t think too much about it. I carried on playing and tried to do my best. Today was a really tough challenge, but the more I played, the more I served and the more I hit forehands, the worse I felt. I asked for medical attention and they told me the area was very sore; I was in a lot of pain. I tried to carry on, but the pain was too much and I hope I haven’t caused any serious damage,” he explained, as reported by Supertennis. The Roman spoke of a problem “with my hip. I don’t know exactly what it is. I hope the scans are clear and that they can tell me what’s wrong. I’ve never had a problem like this before. I had some trouble with my right hip between late 2019 and early 2020, but it was a different kind of pain.”
