The veteran from Palermo, who has previously reached the semi-finals in Paris, beat Dutchman Max Houkes 7-6(5), 6-2 in the first round. In the women’s draw, Martina Trevisan made a positive start, beating Czech Gabriela Knutson 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.
