Trento, May 14 (LaPresse) – The Pantani family will not oppose the motion to dismiss filed by Prosecutor Patrizia Foiera regarding the investigation into the alleged “mafia-style criminal association linked to the death of Marco Pantani.” This was communicated to LaPresse by attorneys Alberto and Fiorenzo Alessi, who represent the parents of Italian cycling champion Marco Pantani, Tonina and Paolo Pantani. “Given the consistency of our defense and the professional integrity required in the exercise of our complex and delicate role,” stated the lawyers for Pantani’s parents, “we have decided not to oppose the motion to dismiss filed and served upon us—as the Pantani couple’s trusted attorneys—by the deputy prosecutor of the Trento Prosecutor’s Office. Having examined the detailed summary of the findings of an objectively extensive and thorough investigation, no grounds have emerged nor do they exist to legitimately support an objection to the request filed by the public prosecutor of Trento.” The prosecutor’s office had been investigating the shadow of the Camorra, which was alleged to have intervened to deny the champion from Romagna victory in the 1999 Giro d’Italia. On the morning of June 5, 26 years ago, in Madonna di Campiglio, when the ‘Pirate’ was firmly in the lead, a surprise blood test excluded him from the race.
