Turin, Dec. 2 (LaPresse) – The first day of the Short Course European Swimming Championships, held in Lublin, Poland, ends on a high note for Italy. The Azzurri in the men’s 4×50 freestyle relay—Leonardo Deplano, Lorenzo Zazzeri, Giovanni Guatti, and Thomas Ceccon—won the gold medal in 1:22.90, matching the Italian record. Silver went to Poland (1:23.63), bronze to Croatia (1:23.79).
“We hadn’t won this relay since 2011, we’ve always had so much bad luck. Today we all brought it home with some decent splits and we equalled the Italian record. I’d say we started well,” Ceccon told Rai Sport microphones after the triumph.
“We did very well, we’re very happy,” he added. “At this point, Poland brings us good luck,” Zazzeri said.
The debutant Guatti admitted that “it was a good debut in a new environment for me; the takeover was a bit of a risk, but we pulled it off.”
