Rome, 5 Nov. (LaPresse) – “We are in favour of taxing the super-rich, and this is a battle we have always fought at European level. We are also open, as part of our alliance and the discussions we are having, to discussing this at national level too.” So said PD Secretary Elly Schlein, speaking at the CGIL assembly ‘The Future Is Now’, alongside other leaders of the progressive camp. “What I would like to emphasise is that for years the right has told us: ‘Look, but this cannot be done because otherwise wealth will flee abroad’. Well then, the right should explain to us why, in Article 17 of its budget bill, it has introduced an exit tax – not on the 5 billion Nicola (Fratoianni, ed.) was talking about, or the 2 billion Maurizio (Landini, ed.) was talking about, but on amounts of 800,000 euros and above – taxing outgoing assets on unrealised capital gains. In other words, to put it this way: whenever we say we need to consider taxing the super-rich, they explain to us that it cannot be done; yet they have provided the solution themselves in this budget, and so we thank them for their contribution to the discussion – a discussion we should also be having amongst ourselves to see how we can bridge our differences. But there is one thing that, in my view, unites us on this issue too – look: we do not want to raise taxes on the middle class; the Meloni government has already done that, pushing the tax burden to a 12-year high,” he added.
